Sooke's Commitment to StrongStart in Early Learning

On March 25, 2010, Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid announced the official opening of the province's newest StrongStart BC Outreach program in Sooke.

StrongStart BC programs are no-cost early learning programs for preschool-aged children accompanied by parent/care givers that are facilitated by Early Childhood Educators. Through activities and socialization, the programs are designed to nurture children linguistically, emotionally and socially while familiarizing them with the school environment.

"These programs add to the community by providing a safe, supportive environment for families who want to prepare their children for success in school and life," said Sooke board of education chair Wendy Hobbs.

Sooke's $50,000 StrongStart BC Outreach program operates at Beecher Bay's early learning centre, A Place to Play and out of Port Renfrew Elementary school.

"The addition of the Beecher Bay StrongStart supports the families with a cultural beginning for their children that is consistent, nurturing and relevant to the local community. Building the generations to come is experienced in this program right in the community context," says District Principal of Aboriginal Education Kathleen King-Hunt.
