The education department of the Stz’uminus First Nation (SFN) is committed to helping SFN members achieve their educational goals and aspirations through the delivery of quality educational programs and services. Educational programming is offered for preschoolers to adults and includes a daycare, primary school, middle school, secondary school and Hul’q’umi’num language program. In addition, SFN operates two schools, Stz’uminus Community School & Stz’unminus Primary School.
School & Community Culture
Stz’uminus First Nation is located on the eastern shores of spectacular Vancouver Island with over three-quarters of our Nation surrounded by the beautiful waters of the Salish Sea. We are a short distance to Ladysmith (population 8,177), which offers the warmth and charm of small town living with affordable housing and a full range of services and amenities.
Nanaimo is 22 kilometres north of Ladysmith and is known as the “Harbour City.” With a growing population of just under 100,000, Nanaimo is the second-largest urban centre on Vancouver Island. This is an area known for its natural beauty, mild climate and a relaxed, yet energetic pace of life.
lifestyle & recreational opportunities
This region is perfect for those who like to boat, kayak, hike, bike, fish and enjoy all that the beautiful west coast has to offer. You’ll find a vibrant local arts community; Nanaimo’s Port Theatre, for example, presents over 250 productions each year. Our community is also close to numerous transportation routes. Seaplanes, ferries and the Nanaimo airport provide easy access to Vancouver, the mainland and other destinations across Canada and beyond.
Why You’ll Love It Here
Staff can participate in professional development opportunities through FNESC and FNSA and benefit from mentorship and ongoing opportunities with the First Peoples Cultural Council.
Salary And Benefits
Teachers new to Stz’uminus receive a competitive annual salary and compensation package. Benefits include extended health care benefits (vision, professional services, medical supplies and services, prescription drugs coverage), a generous pension plan, a full-service employee assistance program, counselling services and paid sick leave.
