School Overview

Why teach at Sikh Academy Elementary?

Established in 2008, Sikh Academy Elementary School is a fully accredited elementary school offering innovative K through Grade 7 programs. We are committed to providing a quality education that exceeds the required standards for education as established by the Ministry of Education and that maintains our reputation as one of the top fully accredited Sikh schools in the country. We aim to introduce the challenges and rewards of the world to our students through a solid curriculum and dedicated faculty who are second to none.

Our Mission, Vision and Values

Our vision calls for us to “Imagine. Innovate. Inspire.” Sikh Academy offers a positive and caring child-centered learning environment where staff, parents and the community work together and empower students to learn and gain confidence to meet life’s challenges.

At Sikh Academy, we strive for excellence in education and we foster students’ academic success by creating a safe and caring environment. Children learn the Sikh way of life and imbibe moral and spiritual values: we work hard to make them responsible citizens with strong social skills who are able to make ethical decisions.

Our Unique Programs

In addition to providing the basics of the K-7 curriculum, we also provide opportunities for students to learn the Punjabi language, as well as Sikh culture and history (with specialized teachers in these fields). Numerous extracurricular clubs focus on the arts, community outreach and sports.

We are also set apart from other schools with our strong relationship between faculty and students; clean, modern facilities and integration of state-of-the-art technology; student participation in missions and outreach; and active and involved parents.

The Community

Our school is based in Surrey and students come to us from communities across Surrey, Delta, Richmond and Langley. Living within the Lower Mainland provides access to mountains, oceans, trails, cities and rural areas all within a short distance of each other. People consider our community one of the best places on earth to live and raise a family, and Vancouver is consistently rated as having one of the highest standards of living around the world.

School Community

Students are actively engaged within the school community and take initiative to pursue community outreach opportunities to help others. Our students truly want to be a part of our culture and environment – they love coming to school, and as such there are very few daily classroom management issues.

Our approach to the curriculum is centered on innovation. Sikh Academy was one of the early adopters of BC’s redesigned curriculum and we have integrated new and innovative approaches to assessment and student feedback.

Lifestyle and Recreational Opportunities

This is a central location with close proximity to sports complexes, art galleries, museums, the hospital, major transportation routes, community centres, parks, beaches, shopping, dining, entertainment and more.

Draw for Employees

Sikh Academy is an equal opportunity employer and we invite applicants from all cultural backgrounds, faiths and beliefs to apply. Adoption or teaching of the Sikh faith is not a requirement to work at Sikh Academy.

Our teachers are excited about the opportunity to work with kids and with a diverse group of teachers who each bring their own perspectives, views and beliefs to the school. Collaboration and team work are at the heart of our workplace culture, and within this environment we want all teachers and students to have fun through learning each and every day.

Our diverse staff is committed to providing an enriching and well-rounded educational experience for our students, which goes beyond the walls and timeframes of the traditional classroom.

Salary and Benefits

Sikh Academy is committed to providing a competitive compensation package for its staff to ensure program delivery remains at the leading edge of educational practice. We offer a competitive compensation package with salaries ranging from $49,000 to $71,000 and that includes benefits, year-end completion bonuses and matching retirement contribution payments. Other perks include a pay-out for non-used sick days and compensation for out-of-town teachers who relocate.

Why you’ll love it here

Teachers work in an environment that facilitates growth and creativity, and new teachers have told us that working here is an extremely rewarding experience. We aim to create a fun environment where teachers meet and collaborate with others., and we support teachers in their initiatives to create opportunities for students.

An environment that supports professional growth

There are six professional development days over the year, both in house and out of school. Teachers thrive in a supportive environment that allows them to grow and hone their own teacher identity. Our collaborative team environment encourages teachers to support each other.

Application Requirements

We invite applications from new graduates and from dynamic, experienced and innovative teachers to join our energetic faculty. Experience in teaching will be considered an asset and successful applicants will be expected to integrate technology into their teaching, demonstrate commitment to student-centered success, work well in a team environment, and be eligible to teach in BC.
