School Overview

Vancouver Talmud Torah (VTT) is an inclusive Jewish community day school committed to academic excellence and nurturing lifelong learners who engage the world through Jewish traditions and values. At VTT, we provide a stimulating and challenging educational environment infused with meaningful learning experiences. Our school serves families from a diverse range of Jewish backgrounds and religious practices. We are Western Canada’s largest Jewish day school with 100 years of experience.

Our Mission, Vision and Values

We teach independent and collaborative learning, core skills, critical thinking and creative thought. We set high standards for our learners and educators that permeate our dual curriculum (general and Judaic studies). Visual and performing arts, athletics and technology enhance our offerings. We set rigorous expectations and have the ability to meet individual needs.

Our Unique Programs

Families enroll their children at VTT for a variety of reasons, but primarily because they want their children to learn about their Jewish heritage and traditions in a warm, safe and nurturing community school. We are a destination school attracting families from across Greater Vancouver. In 2016, we opened our new campus, which was a $30M expansion campaign. The new VTT offers the best in 21st century educational design and learning experiences.

The Community

Our faculty are an integral part of our school community. VTT provides the opportunity to work in a collaborative, innovative and engaging educational setting, and we are committed to on-going professional development and mentorship. Our school offers a culture that values academic excellence, community, inclusivity and social responsibility. One need not be Jewish to work here, but must have an appreciation for Jewish values and culture.

School Community

We are located in the heart of Vancouver, at Oak and King Edward, and are easily accessible by transit, including bus and Canada Line. Our faculty also have access to parking in our underground parkade. There are amenities, including a Safeway, post office, sushi restaurant, and bank right across the street. Our families commute to VTT from across Greater Vancouver.

Vancouver is a highly desirable city in which to live. Our school boasts stunning views of the North Shore mountains (from our rooftop playfield), and the surrounding area has parks, bike lanes and all the necessary amenities. VTT is physically located in the city’s center (not downtown) so it is easy to access anything from our location, including convenient transit.

Oak Street, the main thoroughfare on which our school is situated, has many low-rise apartment buildings with reasonable one-bedroom apartments to rent. There are beautiful homes in the neighbourhood that have one bedroom suites to rent, within walking distance to VTT. There are also community centers nearby, and fees for gym and activity access are very reasonable.

Lifestyle and Recreational Opportunities

Within a stone’s throw to VTT are two stunning parks, Douglas Park Community Centre, BC Children’s Hospital, BC Women’s Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, and a mall with a Safeway, Starbucks, TD Bank, insurance office, medical offices, dollar store and several restaurants. If one is kosher, there is a bakery and restaurant one block away. And if you like bubble tea, the most popular shop in the area in half a block away. You can access almost any amenity from our location.

Draw for Employees

We build a strong community of learners, families, educators and staff. Teachers and families work together for the benefit of students. This is a genuinely happy place to work, and our teachers receive a tremendous amount of respect and support from administrators and parents. Teachers also receive additional time off in observance of Jewish holidays.

Salary and Benefits

Our teachers are beloved by our parents, and this respect is demonstrated in multiple ways. VTT offers a comprehensive benefits package, six professional development days annually, access to additional professional development opportunities, and additional days off during Jewish holidays.

Our faculty receive professional development and mentorship opportunities throughout the academic year. We have a collective agreement that governs salaries and benefits, and all teachers are members of the BCGEU. Our salary scale matches that of the Vancouver Public School Board as our teachers have a collective agreement and are members of the BCGEU. Wages are commensurate with experience and educational credentials.

Why you’ll love it here

As a Jewish community day school, the community is at the core of everything we do. Most of our families come from elsewhere (rest of Canada, USA, Israel, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Britain, France, Australia, etc.) so the VTT community naturally becomes family for all—this includes faculty and staff.

We are also proud of our dual curriculum school (general studies + Judaic/Hebrew studies) and the fact that our students complete the BC Ministry of Education curriculum in half the time. Everyone in our brand-new $30M expanded campus participates in meaningful Jewish traditions and rituals, regardless of one’s background. We respect people of all faiths; 25% of our families are interfaith.
