Why Teach at Island Pacific School?

Located on Bowen Island, British Columbia, Island Pacific School (IPS) is a non-profit independent middle school uniquely designed to give middle school students in grades six through nine the education they need: an education that challenges and surprises them to become the very best of who they are.

Our Mission, Vision and Values

Our motto “Learning. To make a difference.” guides our work as we help students develop, engage and contribute to the world around them at a pivotal time in their lives. Providing a strong foundation for learning enables our students to live their best lives.

Draw for Employees

Island Pacific School’s faculty and staff are selected with an eye for creating a team that shares in the school’s mission and core values. Our teachers are middle school experts from diverse backgrounds, and they bring a wealth of world experiences that are shared as part of the collaborative effort to achieve the school’s open/responsible environment.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT HERE

With small classes of 12 to 18 students and a total school population of 72 students, our teachers enjoy getting to know each student and discovering how best to motivate and inspire them. We work with a close-knit team of IB teachers in a highly collaborative environment and many of our teachers expand their practice beyond the school’s walls by taking advantage of nearby forest trails, professional community members and local organizations.

our teachers are collaborative

Working as a team, our teachers create the capacity for students to ask intelligent questions and they have the latitude to determine the best learning strategies to do this for their own subjects and for each student. Every week, teachers collaborate to stay up to date on what they are teaching, how they are teaching it and how students are responding.

Community & School Culture

Island Pacific School is located on Bowen Island, a supportive and safe community of 3,500 permanent residents. It is situated on the Salish Sea, within beautiful Howe Sound and a 20-minute ferry ride to Metro Vancouver. Approximately half of our students commute to Bowen Island from the mainland.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Students participate in a wide range of academic, artistic and recreational pursuits designed to foster critical inquiry, community engagement and leadership. These programs provide a solid foundation for students who may wish to pursue International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced Placement (AP) programs in high school.

Students learn by approaching ideas and content through critical thinking and inquiry. As they are exposed to new forms of knowledge, they progress from a baseline understanding, to application and then extension.

OUR UNIQUE PROGRAMS

We use the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) as the instructional framework to deliver the new BC curriculum.

Our school climate and atmosphere are best described as “open/responsible”. While students are invited and encouraged to be themselves, the organizational culture expects them to live up to their responsibilities displaying integrity, within an international educational community. Our students want to come to school because it’s fun, it’s safe and because it’s a place that allows them to be themselves.
