From Inner-City London to the Quiet Beauty of B.C.'s Coast Mountains

Long for vast open spaces surrounded by pristine nature? A teaching career in the mountains might be perfect for you.

Moving from the fast-paced, high-pressure environment of inner-city London, England to the quiet, expansive landscapes of northern British Columbia is not a typical career path, but for Julia Nieckarz, Director of Instruction Inclusive Education for Coast Mountain School District #82, it was exactly the right move.

"Working in London is very busy, very high stakes," she reflects. "In Canada, the freedom to engage in some of the best learning styles is right there for you."

Julia began her career teaching in London, where the energy was constant and the expectations intense. While it was an exciting experience, the contrast she found after relocating to Terrace, B.C. was profound.

"When I moved to Terrace, I fell in love with the place," she says. "And I still can't believe that years later, I'm here and still loving it."

A Lifestyle That Shapes Learning

Located in the Coast Mountains, communities like Terrace, Kitimat and Hazelton offer more than just scenic beauty; they provide a lifestyle deeply connected to nature and community.

"If you're an outdoor enthusiast or someone who values close-knit communities, this is the place," Julia explains. "There's so much to explore."

For Julia, that includes skiing, downhill mountain biking, and even owning a horse -something she never imagined possible earlier in life.

"I have a horse in my backyard. I get to say hello to him every day," she shares. "If I had stayed in England, I don't think I would have had this kind of life."

The region's strong connection to the outdoors extends into the classroom as well.

"Outdoor learning and education are literally at your fingertips here. You can take students into the forest, on walks and hikes, and engage them in such meaningful ways. It's incredibly powerful."

A Unique Cultural Experience

Beyond the landscape, the region offers rich cultural learning opportunities.

"You're living and breathing Indigenous culture here," Julia says. "That's something incredibly unique and important – for both educators and students."

At Coast Mountain School District, education looks different than the traditional model.

"We're not looking for the 'sage on the stage,'" Julia explains. "Our students need something vibrant, engaging and hands-on."

The district emphasizes innovation, outdoor learning and inclusive practices like Universal Design for Learning (UDL), all supported by a strong mentorship program for new teachers.

"We want to support educators to try new approaches, to think creatively, and to meet students where they are."

Julia's own career reflects the opportunities available in a smaller district.

After starting as a teacher, she has grown into a leadership role as Director of Instruction. Along the way, she completed a master's degree in inclusive education and earned a certificate in transformative leadership.

"In a smaller community, there are more opportunities to be seen, to contribute, and to grow," she explains. "You can get involved in district initiatives, help shape frameworks like literacy and numeracy, and really have your voice heard."

From mentorship to leadership development, the district actively supports educators who want to expand their impact.

"In larger districts, it can sometimes be harder to stand out," Julia says. "Here, if you're passionate and want to lead learning, people will listen and support you."

A Life You Might Not Expect

Julia originally thought her move to Terrace would be temporary. Years later, it's home.

"I thought we'd be here for a year," she laughs. "But I've been given such an incredible life here, both personally and professionally. I'm forever grateful."

From building a fulfilling career in education to embracing a lifestyle rooted in nature and community, her journey is a testament to what's possible in B.C.'s northern regions.

"I wish more people had the opportunity to experience this," she says. "It truly is something special."
