Welcome to The Balsam School

Why only learn behind a desk when you can learn outside? Why limit students to one building when we have a whole city to explore?

At the Balsam School in Kelowna, our city and nature are important classrooms. Our purpose is to continue to expand the depth of student learning at all grade levels through the purposeful and pedagogically sound incorporation of our community and nature as vital, comprehensive and integrated learning spaces. Our students build learning confidence and resiliency by pushing beyond the expected. Our students are always safe, but not always comfortable.

Why You’ll Love It Here

At The Balsam School, both the city and the natural environment serve as integral extensions of our classrooms.

Our purpose is to deepen student learning at every grade level by thoughtfully and intentionally incorporating community and nature as essential, interconnected learning spaces.

Students develop confidence and resiliency by embracing challenges and pushing beyond the expected. They are always safe in their learning, even when they are not always comfortable.

What We Value

The Balsam School nurtures and challenges students through a broad, experiential and inquiry‑based program in which nature and community serve as fully integrated learning spaces.

Our goal is to help students lead fulfilling lives and contribute to positive change, both locally and globally.

What Makes Us Unique

Experiential education is at the heart of The Balsam Way of Learning.

Inspired by the pioneering work of Kurt Hahn, we continue to embrace, refine and evolve a tradition of immersive, fully engaged learning that empowers young people to make a positive and meaningful difference in their world.

Teachers looking for the challenge and joy of purposefully planning and leading deep learning experiences that integrate nature and our community are encouraged to apply to join our team.

Our School Community

In our school community, educators play a central role in shaping meaningful learning experiences. They select engaging opportunities, pose thoughtful challenges, and ensure every student’s physical and emotional well‑being.

Our staff guide the learning process with care, encourage reflection and provide the information and support students need to grow.

Together, we create a learning environment where students feel safe, supported and ready to take on new challenges.

Kelowna Living

Kelowna’s mild climate and natural beauty make it Canada’s four‑season playground, offering everything from lake activities and hiking to skiing, golfing and exploring local trails.

The city is also the first in Canada to earn a UNESCO Creative City designation in gastronomy, reflecting its vibrant food and cultural scene, which includes markets, wineries, studios and theatres.

Whether you prefer an active pace or a more relaxed lifestyle, Kelowna offers both.

Salary and Benefits

SALARY AND benefits

Our salaries are indexed to the local school district. Staff receive 100 per cent of the district pay scale in years one and two, with gradual adjustments reaching 90 per cent by year ten.

We offer full extended medical benefits on a cost‑shared basis, a matching Group RRSP program, as well as sick days and personal days.

Professional development

Professional development is a core priority at Balsam.

As an IB Candidate School, our current focus is centred on IB‑aligned training and growth opportunities for all staff.
