School Overview

Squiala Elementary School provides a holistic learning environment that accepts and appreciates the uniqueness of each child. It is our goal to instill confidence and independence in our students by empowering their physical, social, spiritual and mental growth in a culturally responsive and rich environment.

School Community

Through co-operation with the Community Centre, Squiala Elementary School is in a new building that has access to a full-size gymnasium, work-out room, sports field with playground, garden and greenhouse. Students make use of our bussing services and breakfast and lunch programs, and our school has on-site social workers, a special education teacher and a play therapist.

Our programs

As a First Nation band school, we hold our traditional cultural practices and language close to our hearts. We believe our children deserve the right to practice Sto:lo cultural ways of life, and culture and the Halq’emeylem language are integrated throughout the weekly class schedules. Elders and Cultural Workers provide this service to the students and cultural resources are available to teachers.

Community Culture

The Squiala First Nation is located near Chilliwack, which is made up of several diverse neighbourhoods and communities – from rural country farming communities to the historical and walkable downtown to the eastern hillsides with stunning views of the valley and picturesque neighbourhoods situated moments away from parks, rivers and lakes.

Chilliwack residents have a connection to community and love to live and work here. Urban growth throughout Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley has brought much prosperity to Chilliwack, and business development and residential growth over the past 20 years has created a prosperous community with an outstanding quality of life. Chilliwack boasts affordable housing, excellent education and health-care systems, diverse shopping and dining choices, limitless recreation and leisure activities, and increasing business and employment opportunities.

About chilliwack

Located in the heart of Chilliwack, our community is fortunate to have access to an abundance of world-class outdoor recreation. It’s a short drive to the many lakes in the nearby mountain valleys, such as Chilliwack, Cultus and Harrison lakes, and the Chilliwack River is famous for white water rafting, kayaking and fishing. By hiking to the top of our local mountains, on a clear day you can see across the Salish Sea to Vancouver Island. Day trips to Manning Park or Sasquatch Mountain Resort will have you skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and tubing with beautiful views of our local mountains. Our valleys are full of mountain bike trails as well as the Trans Canada trail, with hikes for all abilities from beginners to advanced. Chilliwack also boasts two ice rinks, four swimming pools, and a stunning Cultural Centre with an active performing and visual arts scene, and a campus for the University of the Fraser Valley. Only 90 minutes from Vancouver and all it has to offer, Chilliwack is a perfect location to enjoy all our province has to offer.

Why You’ll love it here

Squiala First Nation believes strongly that in order for our staff to support the holistic health of our students, we must also support the health of our staff. Self-care is important to us: our gym facilities are open to staff and we encourage staff to pursue their passions outside of work. Squiala is invested in the cultural growth of all staff members and as such, elementary staff (Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike) are provided with regular opportunities throughout the year to learn more about our local Sto:lo culture and history, Halq’emeylem language, and trauma-informed approaches to education.
