Why become an educator with SelfDesign Learning Foundation?
BC certified educators, called Learning Consultants (LCs) at SelfDesign, work online from home on a flexible schedule. Educators are independent contractors and work interdependently, supported by comprehensive orientation, mentorship and a team of experienced peers. Our educators gather virtually throughout the year and in person once each year for orientation, professional development and in-person connection.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Compensation is contract-based and varies according to roles, number of learners, and the individual applicant. Benefits may be available through external providers to independent contractors.

Our Online Learning Model
With SelfDesign, learning takes place in the learner’s home, online and in their local community.
We provide each learner with digital technologies and resources as a complement to real-world learning. Learners can access real-time online connections with their peers and B.C. certified educators using web-conferencing technology. They work with their educator on the ePortfolio digital platform for communication and access resources to extend their learning through the SelfDesign Learning Experiences Library.
We also provide optional group learning opportunities and in-person events such as online workshops for students, online forums for parents and learners, in-person camps, community gatherings, special interest clubs, work experience and apprenticeship programs, and more!
OUR PHILOSOPHY
We believe that each child is the author of their own learning journey. Our model and philosophy focus on personalized and lifelong learning. We follow the BC Ministry of Education curriculum in a way that puts the child at the centre of their learning journey. We recognize that learning is a process, not a product, and that it’s centred on relationships and conversation.
Our B.C. certified educator–contractors guide each child to develop a personalized learning plan to help them achieve the path to completion that best suits them – B.C. Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma), Adult Graduation Diploma, or School Completion (“Evergreen”) Certificate.
OUR INNOVATIVE APPROACH
We go above and beyond the walls of a classroom because our learners do. We offer a personalized and flexible approach to education for over 2,000 learners from kindergarten to grade 12 each year.
OUR UNIQUE PROGRAM
Our inclusive education program provides equal access to learning opportunities for all learners by providing personalized support services. We put the needs of learners first because each individual has their own learning style, interests and goals.
We offer many opportunities for Indigenous education – for our Indigenous learners and families, for our educators, and for all of the SelfDesign community.
We also actively support the BC Ministry of Education’s SOGI 123 initiative. Our Rainbow Hub, Gender Sexual Orientation Alliance (GSA) and Family Services team provide services and information to help our learners, families of the learners, and educators.
