Our school

The educational experience at nk̓maplqs iʔ snm̓am̓ay̓aʔtn iʔ k̓l sqilxʷtət is unique and provides the opportunity for students to excel in sqilxʷ cultural and language learning. Teachers and instructors thoughtfully plan the academic and sqilxʷ programs to meet and exceed provincial curriculum standards, and to connect curriculum to sqilxʷ cultural perspectives. The school offers a student-centred approach to teaching and learning based on individual student strengths and interests. To promote a strong Okanagan language program, all educational staff participate in thirty minutes of language instruction a day which is specifically for adults.

Our community

The Okanagan Indian Band is located at the head of Okanagan Lake in Vernon, BC, with our seven reserves totalling 11,282 hectares. There are currently about 2,030 Okanagan Indian Band members, with half living on reserve and most of these residing at IR#1 at Vernon. The Okanagan Indian Band offers a variety of services and facilities to members, including health care, social services and early childhood education. Our new school is currently under construction and is scheduled for completion in 2025.

Our location on Okanagan Lake and proximity to Vernon and all its amenities – including Silver Star Mountain Resort – make this a wonderful place to live.

Salary And Benefits

Salary ranges for teachers are $55,000 to $75,000. Certified educational assistants are paid $23 per hour. We offer health benefits, a pension plan and technology support.

Application Requirements

Depending on the role, we require BC Teacher Certification or an education assistant certificate.
