School Overview

Kitasoo Community School is located at the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest in Klemtu, BC, a remote fly-in First Nation community. Our mission is to ensure that school programs and services enhance the academic, emotional, physical and social well-being of all students. We accomplish our mission through an understanding and appreciation of individual learner needs, supported by an excellent, highly trained collaborative staff working closely with parents, Elders and community.

Our school

We have small class sizes in a school of around 55 students, with an adult to student ratio of four students to one adult. Our language program is revitalizing local language and culture, and we offer the Supporting Emerging Aboriginal Stewards program to provide opportunities for all to learn from the land and gain pride and confidence in their culture and heritage.

We provide excellent Tier 1 instruction in the classrooms and ensure the delivery of well-planned curriculum and varied teaching strategies. Additional interventions help us support students to achieve success and raise reading and math to grade level. We maximize student learning  in a safe, caring, healthy and nurturing environment.

Our community

Klemtu is an isolated fly-in community on Swindle Island, 225 kilometres northwest of Bella Bella in the heart of the Great Bear rainforest. Expect a lot of rain and beautiful landscapes. This is a tight-knit community where we respect each other and work together when something needs to get done. We have a good health care clinic, stewardship office and Canadian Post office branch, as well as a band store with basic groceries.

We offer excellent professional development training on topics selected by staff. As a fly-in community, we balance local professional development – drawing on the expertise of our staff – with online sessions.
