District Overview

The Fort Nelson School District serves students from the town of Fort Nelson and the Northern Rockies Regional District. The School District has five schools. There are four schools in the township of Fort Nelson, the J.S. Clark Elementary School, the G.W. Carlson Elementary School serving kindergarten to Grade four students, the R.L. Angus Elementary School serving students in Grades 5 to 7, and Fort Nelson Secondary School serving students in Grades 8 to 12. Our one rural school, Toad River School serves students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Specialty Programs

Our schools boast strong computer facilities and offer students many opportunities in athletics and music. At Fort Nelson Secondary, extracurricular activities include basketball, volleyball, golf and band, and an excellent art and drama program. New to Fort Nelson Secondary is a cosmetology program offered to students in grades 11 and 12.

Fort Nelson offers a range of facilities that include a golf course, aquatic centre, arena, curling rink, museum, performing arts and movie theatre, and library. Community Culture

Fort Nelson has a population of 5,000, with approximately 15 percent of Aboriginal ancestry. There is a strong community spirit, and the district benefits from the support of caring and committed parents and staff, as well as from partnerships with the community and industry in various educational initiatives.

Teachers typically receive a comprehensive benefits package including:

Allowances and additional incentives

Recruitment and Retention Incentives

  • Current vacant enrolling teacher positions are eligible for a pre-employment signing bonus of $10,000 in return for a successful candidate accepting a job offer for the positions. The successful candidate must be an enrolling certified BC teacher or enrolling teacher eligible for and pursuing BC certification.
  • All teaching staff receive a pensionable monthly allocation based on their FTE, along with an additional annual compensation of $2,947.

Bonuses & Allowances

  • Relocation allowance of $3,030.65 (paid over 3 years) or a one-time immediate payment of $721.46.
  • Course bonus of $63 per unit of ongoing coursework, up to 12 units per year.
  • $275 per annum classroom supplies allowance.
  • $1,400 per annum personal professional development allowance plus an additional three days of leave for professional development activities.

Additional Incentives

  • Northern tax exemption of approximately $5,400 per family.
  • Northern travel exemption of approximately $850 per family member.
