School Overview

Selkirk Montessori is one of the few Montessori schools in the province providing Montessori programs for students from age three to 14, encompassing early primary, lower elementary, upper elementary and middle school. We offer a collaborative and collegial school team and a supportive and engaged school community.

Why Teach At Selkirk Montessori School?

Selkirk Montessori School was created in 1980 by a group of parents who were interested in having an elementary Montessori option for their children in Victoria. Starting with preschool, kindergarten and grade one, they added a new grade every year until they reached grade seven.

From the original old wood-framed building to today’s a beautiful, purpose-built Montessori facility, Selkirk Montessori has thrived for over 40 years. We added Grade 8 to round off our middle school – as well as a two-storey addition in 2015 – and are now able to provide an enriched, continuous education from age three to age 14.

MISSION, VISION AND VALUES

Our vision is to cultivate a lifelong love of learning in our children and inspire them to realize their full potential while enjoying life’s journey and positively contributing to the world around them. Guided by the Montessori philosophy, our mission is to provide a caring school community that nurtures every child’s natural curiosity for learning and supports the full development of their academic, social, artistic, physical and life skills.

Being a member of the Selkirk Montessori community ROCKS! Our interactions, behaviours and problem-solving centre around:

  • Respect: We seek to understand each other, take care of our environment and work to create a positive environment.
  • Open-mindedness: We celebrate diversity, try new things, are flexible thinkers and approach collaboration with curiosity.
  • Communication: We actively listen, thoughtfully speak, honour and express our own feeling and ideas, and acknowledge and consider the feelings and ideas of others.
  • Kindness: We help and inspire others, include everyone, use compassion, solve problems and take great care with our community.
  • Success: We challenge ourselves and persevere when obstacles arise, make a difference in our community, work together to accomplish big things, participate in service work and are true to ourselves.

Draw for Employees

We are a community of diverse and enthusiastic learners, both students and staff. We believe in community, teamwork and bringing joy and interest to our learning. Our students have the advantage of a well-rounded program right from the age of three. They have, generally, developed a love of learning. Our teachers appreciate the flexibility and challenges of a collaborative teacher team to explore rich academic content and broad opportunities for creative studies.

WHY YOU’ll Love it here

Selkirk Montessori School provides a team-teaching approach, which means that teaching responsibilities are shared. Having a “partner” helps to reduce the day-to-day stress of teaching. It also means that each teacher has more time to prepare and deliver lessons and provide follow-up with students who might be struggling.

We have good staff-to-student ratios, and our school-based team is second to none in supporting staff with student or classroom concerns. Specialists teach French, music, physical education and technology. Our entire school staff works as a team, and when something needs doing, it’s all hands on deck! We support each other personally and professionally.

Community & School Culture

At Selkirk Montessori, preschool, elementary and middle school children learn at their own pace through guided exploration. Learning from their personal experiences, they own the knowledge they have gained. Independence, confidence, self-discipline and a love of learning are qualities that distinguish Montessori students. Students leave Selkirk Montessori with a secure foundation for a successful transition to further studies.

Our community

Located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island on the homelands of the Songhees and Esquimalt People, Victoria is a forward-thinking, active community. Victoria is unique in that we are the capital of BC, with a rich history starting with the Lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples.

We are a tourism hub, welcoming visitors all year round, and we are a ferry ride away from Vancouver, Whistler and Seattle. We also have well-respected universities and colleges.
