School Overview

Artemis Place is like no other school program in the province: we are a special education, independent school and run life skills and counselling programming as well as a young parent program with funding from the Ministry of Children and Family Development. We have autonomy and flexibility as well as the ability to be responsive in our approach to meeting each student’s strengths, challenges and needs.

Our Society has been in operation since 1971, creating and running grassroots, alternative education opportunities for young women who weren’t able to experience success in the mainstream school system. In 2010, we opened our tuition-free independent school, and in 2014 we became a special education independent school. In 2016, we officially became trans-inclusive.

Why teach at Artemis Place Secondary?

Our Mission, Vision and Values

Our mission is to provide holistic social and emotional support and high school education to young women and trans-youth in a nurturing community and to provide an enriched early childhood experience to infants and toddlers of young parents while modelling care-giving skills and supporting each student in their parenting.

Our vision is for students to experience educational success, find their voice, fulfill their potential and have the power to achieve their dreams.

Draw for Employees

Our team includes a progressive, interdisciplinary group of people who are committed, grounded and compassionate professionals. As our students most often face complex needs, this workplace is for individuals who are self-aware, have open hearts, positive mental health tools and strategies and work well in high-functioning teams. Many staff have worked at Artemis Place for many years and are also good friends.

The approach to decision-making is mostly by consensus and staff are encouraged to take ownership and autonomy in the program by integrating their own passions and interests. As role models, staff are respectful, patient, competent and manage conflict in open and kind ways. Humour is always appreciated.

The school enrolls around 50 students offering a cohesive and safe community for our students.

Why you’ll love it here

The Artemis Place team is a terrific group of individuals who are supportive, fun and hard working. There are ongoing professional development opportunities and funding, competitive non-unionized compensation and benefits, and the ability to be creative in designing programming for students who have faced an unfair amount of challenges. Artemis Place encourages stringent professional and personal boundaries so work can be left at work.

All staff at Artemis Place work hourly and no work is to be taken home after hours; all marking and reporting is done on-site during work hours, and there are no expectations for extra-curricular commitments. This is a component of our commitment to staff wellness.

Community & School Culture

Our school receives funding from both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Youth and Family Counsellors facilitate a case management practice in caseloads of 1:16. The program’s philosophy is grounded in feminist and attachment-based theory, trauma-informed practice, and the desire to create an intentional community and provide holistic and wraparound supports.

Our first priorities are safety, relationship and community-building to create an environment where students who have resisted traditional school systems can thrive. All students are on IEPs and work self-paced through curriculum. Wellness and life skills are integrated throughout the curriculum, and enrichment opportunities are offered in areas such as the arts, outdoor education and gardening.

The Community

Artemis Place is located in Saanich near the borders of Oak Bay and Victoria. Easily accessible by bus and biking routes, we are in a residential neighbourhood that is one block from Camosun College and three blocks from Hillside Mall.

The City of Victoria offers many cultural and recreational opportunities, including theatre performances, art galleries, sports clubs, recreation centres, movies, restaurants and much more.

Victoria is family-friendly and a great city to live in
