About

“To empower all learners to live the challenges of a diverse and changing world.”

It is the purpose of our school district to improve the life chances of every student by delivering the richest, most appropriate and supportive learning environment possible. The successful future of our community and global society requires a literate and critical-thinking population.

Regional Diversity

A unique geographical area between the Coast Mountains and the interior plateau, the Bulkley Valley provides unlimited opportunities for year-round recreation, including fishing, hiking, alpine and Nordic skiing, canoeing, kayaking and horseback riding. The region’s economic diversity includes agriculture, logging, tourism and mining. First Nations add a rich cultural element to the schools.

Specialty Programs

Our district has a strong professional learning community that fosters ongoing growth and sharing among educators. The teacher-leadership group meets regularly to share project work and learn from one another. All schools are actively involved in the Network of Performance Based Schools and are supported in other inquiry initiatives.

Community Culture

Our communities offer a wide range of cultural and recreational opportunities. Houston has a very active snowmobile association and recently opened a swimming pool and recreation center. Smithers hosts many music and arts festivals throughout the year, and the “Ski and Ride Smithers” alpine ski area is just 20 minutes from downtown.

Draw for Employees

Our core values of honesty, fairness, respect, responsibility and compassion contribute to our collegial and supportive professional environment. We value consultation with stakeholders, transparency of practice and forming positive relationships. This is an excellent district for a teacher to meaningfully engage with learners while growing as a professional.
