WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT HERE

Here are five reasons:

  1. GNS is an International Baccalaureate World Continuum School. Our students and teachers have embraced an internationally recognized ‘gold’ standard of education.
  2. GNS is a member of the Round Square—a worldwide network of innovative schools in 40 countries across five continents that share a common set of IDEALS
  3. GNS is a day school—a school we all come to in the morning and go home at the end of the day. As a result, parents are important partners in their children’s education.
  4. GNS is a school with an international outlook. International students at the school take part in our unique Family Boarding program where they live with members of the GNS community, including current families, teachers and staff members. Their Canadian experience transcends a school experience to become a cultural, family one.
  5. GNS is the only school in Canada with a Junior School campus on the ocean. As a result, Marine Adventure and Outdoor Education for students in grades JK to 12 is alive and well at GNS.

Community & School Culture

SCHOOL COMMUNITY

GNS’ Junior School is the only beachfront junior campus in Canada, located on picturesque Beach Drive in the Oak Bay area of Victoria, approximately 15 minutes driving from the downtown core. The Middle and Senior School campus is one kilometre away in the Rockland neighbourhood, which is a 10 minute drive from downtown. Both campuses are located in quiet, idyllic residential communities and surrounded by current and former GNS families.

With 700 students from JK to Grade 12, GNS is a small community school where every student is known by name. Parents are actively involved in the school community and many volunteer their time to support our program. We pride ourselves on being a ‘family school’ that lives by its values and looks out for one another. We enjoy a caring, collegial and collaborative environment – our faculty and staff are a dedicated group of people who believe in our mission and work hard everyday to make it a reality.

OUR UNIQUE PROGRAMS

The foundation of the GNS experience is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Comprised of three separate but complementary strands—the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP)—this modern, inquiry-based approach to learning is designed to enable students of all abilities to find success in their studies and to develop the skills necessary to lead happy and rewarding lives.

As an IB World Continuum school, we pride ourselves on delivering a program that ensures students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 learn foundation skills at a challenging level enabling them to develop higher level thinking skills such as research, analysis and synthesis. Our committed, expert and compassionate teachers put our students first and work as a team with parents to make sure that we approach students as individuals, so that they learn to do their best through truth and courage.

THE COMMUNITY

Victoria is BC’s capital, yet the city of 400,000 residents retains a small-town feel. Both of GNS’ campuses are close enough to downtown for easy access, yet far enough-removed to avoid many of the inconveniences associated with urban living like traffic congestion. Downtown Victoria boasts excellent shopping, dining and cultural opportunities and all of the amenities one would expect from a thriving cosmopolitan city, including the oldest Chinatown in Canada. Victoria is also a short ferry ride away from both Vancouver and Seattle.

Victoria boasts thriving athletic and cultural communities. The Save on Foods Memorial Centre is home to the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League and regularly hosts concerts from the biggest names in music, including the Tragically Hip, Elton John and Rod Stewart. Victoria is also home to the Royal BC Museum and Archives, the Robert Bateman Centre and countless other museums and galleries. The theatre scene in Victoria is also top-notch, with the city often welcoming traveling shows and also regularly showcasing local talent in various productions at a variety of theatres throughout the Capital Region.

LIFESTYLE AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Victoria and Vancouver Island are an outdoor-lover’s paradise, surrounded by beaches, parks, hiking trails and other amenities. Swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and other water activities are only minutes away in any direction. More extreme adventure-seekers can catch a wave in nearby Tofino, home to some of the best surfing in Canada, while snow-lovers can carve turns on Mount Washington in the Comox Valley. Vancouver Island is also a food and drink-lover’s delight, home to wineries, craft breweries, myriad casual and fine dining experiences and everything in between.

Often referred to as the ‘City of Gardens,’ Greater Victoria enjoys Canada’s most temperate and comfortable climate. This translates into cool, dry summers with temperatures rarely climbing above 30 degrees Celsius and mild winters that see the mercury sinking below -2 degrees Celsius only a few nights of the year.

Salary and Benefits

GNS offers a comprehensive salary and benefits package. Teaching salaries are reviewed annually to ensure we remain competitive to the local school districts and independent schools in our area. Teachers with a master’s degree also receive an additional stipend. We offer extensive internal and external professional development opportunities and an excellent benefits package. Our teachers are well-supported by an engaged Leadership Team and committed families who partner with the school in pursuing their children’s academic aspirations.
