Early career teachers looking to launch their careers in education should consider BC's North.

Currently, Northern BC school districts have 34 teaching jobs listed on Makeafuture.ca—28 of those are full-time teaching opportunities. There are jobs for primary and intermediate teachers, and secondary teachers in French Immersion, Physical Education, Home Economics, Technology Education, and other subjects.

Teachers in Northern BC school districts enjoy a variety of financial incentives, professional benefits, and lifestyle advantages.

Financial and Professional Development Incentives

In addition to higher compensation, teachers in Northern BC school districts enjoy a variety of financial incentives.

For instance, teachers assigned to remote and rural communities are eligible for isolation allowances of up to $3,000 annually. Teachers moving into a northern BC community may receive a relocation allowance up to $2,300 to cover moving costs.

Other benefits include generous professional development funds, classroom supplies allowances, and a travel allowances. Furthermore, in a district like Fort Nelson, teachers are eligible for a northern tax exemption of $5,400 per family.

These financial incentives are especially attractive to early career teachers eager to pay back their student loans.

Lifestyle and Recreational Advantages

Another attractive characteristic of many northern BC schools is that they are located in smaller communities where schools and classroom sizes are smaller. Some teachers enjoy a student to teacher ratio of 10:1, which affords teachers more one-to-one time with their students.  Multi-grade classrooms are also common in these smaller communities.

There are also numerous lifestyle benefits to living in the North. Central Coast School District No. 49 located in the beautiful Bella Coola Valley is known for its rich diverse cultural community and mild climate.

Haida Gwaii School District No. 50, located in the Queen Charlotte Islands, is in a remote region of BC known for its immaculate natural beauty and stunning natural environment. The district also offers its employees district housing.

Situated in BC's northern coast, teachers in the Prince Rupert School District No. 52 enjoy activities like sea kayaking, sport fishing, mountain climbing, and other year-round activities.

Not all school districts are small rural and remote communities. Inland, Peace River North School District No. 60 is located in the 'energetic city' of Fort St. John, which operates 20 schools and serves nearly 6,000 students.
