$50 million has been injected into the British Columbia public education system to immediately hire teachers. Education Minister Mike Bernier made this announcement last Thursday. This amount equates to hiring approximately 1,000 full-time equivalent teachers; however, the actual number of positions created will vary depending on the needs of individual districts.
As of January 9th, 2017, there are 183 job openings available on www.makeafuture.ca. Many of the vacancies are for teachers teaching on-call (TTOC) and subject specialists in roles such as French immersion, special education, technology education, and learning assistance. There are also a number of difficult-to-fill job openings including school counsellors, educational psychologists, teacher-librarians, and speech-language pathologists that remain unfilled.
In the next few weeks, the types of teachers needed across the province will become clearer and job seekers will notice an influx of new teacher job postings on the Make a Future site. We anticipate that the demand for teachers will outstrip the supply of teachers available locally. Many districts are already looking to Ontario, Alberta, Quebec, New Brunswick and other jurisdictions to staff their vacancies.
