More French teachers are needed in British Columbia schools because there are not enough “qualified” French teachers to meet the growing demand, according to a recent Vancouver Sun article.

The article cited a report published by the Canadian Parents for French, which notes that French Immersion enrollment has continuously increased for 14 years. Last year 46,900 students were registered in French Immersion, which equates to 8.1% of overall student enrollment in the province.

And even though there are 40 districts that offer French Immersion programs, many have set-up lottery systems to select students, because districts’ programs are unable to meet the demand.

The increase in demand in French teachers can also been seen with the number of French teacher job postings on Makeafuture.ca. In 2012, over 260 job postings for French teachers were posted on Makeafuture.ca—a 67% increase from the last year.

Despite the number of job opportunities available, many of these positions remain unfilled. Several BC school districts have even traveled outside of the province to recruit French teachers from universities in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

Currently, there are 39 French Immersion and FSL job postings on Makeafuture.ca.

If you’re thinking about moving into a leadership role at one of British Columbia’s public schools, there’s no better time to look than now. Currently, BC school districts across the province are recruiting for over 20 principal and vice principal vacancies at various elementary, middle, and secondary schools.

Many districts are recruiting principals and vice principals for their “principal pools” for roles that start in the fall school year. Districts create principal pools in anticipation of expected vacancies, so that no school is left without a leader.

If you’re already a Principal or Vice Principal, and you’re looking for a fresh start in another region of BC in a new school, there are plenty of opportunities to go around. There are opportunities in all seven regions of British Columbia including Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, Kootenay, Okanagan, Northern BC, Central BC, and the Sunshine Coast/Vancouver Island.

Principals are generally responsibility for the overall administration and operation of a school. They oversee the implementation of the district’s priorities, and educational programs. General requirements to work as a principal or vice principal in BC schools includes a BC teaching certificate from the BC Teacher Regulation Branch and a Master’s degree in education.

The Certified Educational Facility Manager (CEFM) designation is the new quality and competence standard for professionals responsible for the management, maintenance and operation of educational buildings.

The CEFM designation was created by the Educational Facilities Managers Association of British Columbia (EFMA BC) and the Alberta Educational Facilities Administrator Association (AEFFAA) with the intention of ensuring that members with this designation are properly skilled, trained, and experienced to work in BC’s educational facilities.

Current EFMA BC members who are in good standing may apply for this designation. To apply for and maintain a CEFM designation, EFMA BC members are required to maintain current in their trade by engaging in specific training and professional development programs. The CEFM certification program also outlines identifiable career paths for facility professionals who are interested in receiving further training to advance their careers.

The designation is endorsed by the British Columbia Association of School Business Officials (BCASBO), an association of business professionals working within school districts, whose membership includes Managers of Human Resources amongst other senior management groups.More information about the program can be found on the EFMA BC website.
