The application process for a job in BC’s public education sector is determined at the individual school district level. Each district has its own unique set of guidelines for applicants to follow when applying for a job. To ensure that your application has been submitted in the appropriate manner, please read each job posting carefully.
Before applying to a teaching opportunity in one of BC’s public schools, it is helpful to be mindful of the following:
- Is the district hiring?
- Most often, districts do not accept unsolicited applications. Make sure that your application is seen by applying to active job postings. Search for jobs to see who’s hiring.
- Are your application documents current ?
- Generally, districts require a specific set of documents. In some cases, districts require an application form.
- Do you have good standing with the Teacher Regulation Branch (formerly BC College of Teachers)?
- If you’re an applicant from outside of the province of British Columbia, or you’ve been out of the workforce for a few years, check with the Teacher Regulation Branch of the Ministry of Education to see if your certificate is still valid (not cancelled or suspended).
- Have you made your application portfolio visible to school districts?

- Under ‘My Porfolio’, check off the box to make your portfolio visible to that district

- Does I apply on-line or off-line?
- Read the job posting clearly to see if the district specifies an alternate way to apply. If it doesn’t, assume that you may apply online.
- Have you signed-up for Make a Future’s e-news for educators?

When applying for a teaching opportunity, please remember to include the following documents in your application package:
- Resume
- Cover letter
- List of references / reference letters
- Teacher Regulation Branch Teachers Certificate
- TQS (Teacher Qualification Service) Category Card
- Practicum reports and evaluations
- Official academic transcripts (photocopies are not acceptable; however, scanned electronic copies are permissible)
- Post-secondary diplomas / certificates
- Work permit (required only for non-Canadian residents)
