We provide many varied opportunities for students to learn and develop their potential. Programs of choice and alternative educational pathways develop learners’ skills, attitudes and abilities. Our core values – respect, integrity and compassion – are reflected in our schools’ activities.
Regional Diversity
Historically, New Westminster was the capital of BC and the crossroads of the Lower Mainland. It is still a hub, with a rich multicultural mix of students and a strong Aboriginal presence. Many New Westminster families have grandparents, parents and children who have all attended the same elementary school. Students learn together at the district’s only secondary school, New Westminster Secondary School.
Specialty Programs
Our district offers exceptional opportunities for professional development. Teachers can join district research teams for SmartReading and math, which continue to refine learning practices. Practical classroom research develops effective teaching and learning strategies. In elementary, programs of choice include early and late French immersion and Montessori. At the senior school, we offer French immersion, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs.
Community Culture
New Westminster has the feel of a large family. In this medium-sized district, staff, parents and students come to know and understand one another. It is a caring district, offering exceptional services for students with special and alternative needs and a wide variety of programming for all students.
